T – Three quarter length shorts
Shorts are quite simply short trousers which were introduced in British school uniforms where young boys would wear shorts until reaching a certain age (around puberty) or height after which they would be given their first pair of long trousers. Also around the 1890s, knee pants a type of short trouser became standard for many American boys. The only difference I could suggest between the British and American equivalents is that the British version might have been slightly higher still above the knee. So since its beginning short trousers have always been one thing, short. So then why the hell have three quarter length shorts been invented? Shorts are an informal item but ones that come to the knee or above generally look smart. Three quarter length ones just look dumb and more to the point, they don’t look like shorts. They look like the tailor got his measurements wrong and made them too short, that or either the owner of said ‘shorts’ has outgrown his clothing or they’ve shrunk in the wash. In this day and age shorts are worn in warm weather as it would be too hot to wear trousers but wearing shorts in the sun feels great too, to have the warmth of the sun on your legs for example, as well as be suited to warm weather they are also practical for most sports, allowing greater range of movement and freedom. Therefore why wear three quarter length shorts? The only part of your legs that are going to get any sun or feel any summer breeze to cool off are your ankles and as for any strenuous activity, the extra length of fabric is only going to restrict you. You might as well be wearing trousers.
Exceptions where this faux pas is acceptable
When you want tanned ankles only.
